Naomi Sultanik

My art is grounded in drawing in the sense that it defines a process reflecting the multiple implications of the word itself. This includes an investigation of the material at hand whether it be paper and pencil, fabric, a word or an object. Often the play of one material against another – text against gesture, for example – creates the space for an idea or image to grow. I draw upon landscapes that are part of my history yet seem to renew themselves in the present. We understand the “view” we see but the presence and implications of the unseen take us into a world of seductive connections. I like the Ashanti expression for the New Year – “When the edges of the world meet”.
